Discussion Questions for Francis Bacon's
Idols That Beset Men's Minds

  1. What questions do you have about Bacon's essay? What parts of it do you not understand very well? ("Not any of it, you guys!" is not an acceptable answer. ;-) )

  2. What, in your opinion, are the one or two most important ideas in this whole piece by Francis Bacon? Please explain why you think that idea is (or those ideas are) so important.

  3. Why do you suppose this essay is included in a course titled Ways of Knowing? What, in your mind, does it have to say about the themes that would be explored in a course with that title?
